Software - Favorites and other news

What is a software favorite of yours? Do you have any tips about using any particular program? Do you have any questions about a program such as who is using it in their school, is anyone having trouble with something, or is anyone interesting in purchasing some program? Here is the place for those questions.

Tech4Learning is offering a discount if we purchase more than 100 of one of their programs. Some of their programs include WebBlender2, MediaBlender, Pixie, ImageBlender, Twist, Frames, and Clay Animation. We can join together to purchase these programs so that we get the discount. We have done this in the past with Inspiration and Kidspiration. If you know of any other group discounts we can get if we purchase together, let us know. We all like to save money.

Free Open Source Software

Tux Paint http://www.tuxpaint.org/

Tux Paint is a great free open source program and is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. An excellent substitute for schools who cannot afford to purchase programs like Kid Pix.

It is similar to Kid Pix in that a number of painting and drawing features and effects are available. The program can be configured to be restarted several times in a networked environment using a server but also can be installed as a stand alone on each computer. Configurations can be customized for each user. There is a text block tool available and the stamp tool allows for imported images as well as those you create to customize for your curriculum (you need to provide your own image editor though.)
